October has flown past in a bit of blur, thank goodness for my trusty phone gallery to keep me right or there's a good chance I would have missed a few fabulous cafes. This month 70% of the places I visited were new to me - which has been fun! From a cocktail-themed afternoon tea to a new local cafe opening up in my neighbourhood, keep scrolling to find out where I ate in Edinburgh (October 2018)!
1. Zebra Coffee Company / 16 Bank Street
I love visiting new coffee shops so what better way to start the month of October off than with a visit to Zebra Coffee - somewhere I've been wanting to visit for a while! I've often passed Zebra Coffee but have often been in a rush to get somewhere. Just wanted to say thanks to Travelouder for inviting me! They had an impressive range of brownies, I opted for their After Eight (for those of you outside the UK, it's a chocolate mint) brownie. I also had a hot chocolate - I know, chocolate overload! If you're looking for a cosy coffee shop, I'd highly recommend Zebra Coffee, they even have a lovely secret garden out the back. 2. Coates Cafe / 62 Haymarket Terrace
Firstly, thanks to the lovely Maggs (@maaggss_) for introducing me to Coates Cafe! I'm not normally in the Haymarket area so hadn't come across it before. We couldn't stop taking photos of their gorgeous interior and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Click here to see a snap of our after lunch treat!
3. The Pastry Section / 86 Raeburn Place
Last month, I had the opportunity to work with the lovely folks over at LateRooms to create a 24hr guide to Edinburgh. Naturally, I had to include one of my favourite places for a sweet treat, The Pastry Section, so it was the perfect excuse to pay them a visit and indulge in one of their tarts (a personal favourite of mine). If you haven't been, what are you waiting for!
4. Eteaket / 41 Frederick Street
I had the absolute pleasure of finally meeting Frances (@Francesmehardie) after being Instagram friends and an admirer of her photos for years! Since we're both avid tea drinkers, Frances suggested we visit Eteaket. We both opted for their High Tea, which consists of sandwiches, a scone, a pot of tea, and a sweet treat.
5. Brochan. / 24 Marchmont Crescent
If you read my recent blog "The Best Places for Vegetarian Food in Edinburgh!", you won't be surprised that I recently visited Brochan for the first time and really liked it. There's a range of flavours to choose from as well as seasonal specials. I opted for their blueberry pumpkin seed (£6.50) with a matcha latte and my friend had their spiced plum with a turmeric latte. We both loved it!
6. The Pantry Colinton / 2 Bridge Road
I love exploring beyond Edinburgh's city centre and this month I got the opportunity to explore Colinton. My friend Colette and I stopped by the Pantry for lunch before a lovely autumnal stroll through Colinton dell. We enjoyed our food, although found it slightly pricey. However, we really appreciated the fact it was dog-friendly, so Colette's adorable French Bulldog Rudi could join us!
7. Peacock Alley / The Waldorf Astoria
There is something oh so decadent and indulgent about afternoon tea, so when an invite popped into my inbox to dine at Peacock Alley at the Waldorf Astoria, naturally, I happily accepted. It worked out well as it coincided with my mum's birthday. First of all, I have to mention the gorgeous surroundings. The Waldorf Astoria is situated on the site that once was The Caledonian Railway Station and the original walls and station clock can be seen in the Peacock Alley. When we visited the theme was "Cocktails" so all our cakes and treats were designed with that in mind. For instance, there was Bloody Mary prawns sandwiches, Mojito jelly shot, Cosmopolitan Madeleine, and White Russian scones - to name a few. Overall, I was very impressed. I've been for my fair share of afternoon teas and I loved their attention to detail and creativity.
8. Three.14 / 38 Dalkeith Road
How exciting! A new coffee shop has popped up in my neighbourhood. Three.14 is directly opposite the Commonwealth Pool and is a lovely spot for cake and a cuppa. I loved the decor and was very impressed by their range of home baking.
9. Hideout Cafe / 40-42 Queen Charlotte Street
After wanting to visit the Hideout Cafe for ages, I finally had the perfect excuse when someone suggested it for a meeting. It didn't disappoint! The interior was quirky and charming, plus there was a lovely range of food and drink options. Will definitely be back soon.
9. Strumpets / 35 William Street
I've been enjoying the community aspect of Instagram lately and trying to meet up with various Instagram accounts that I admire and interact with so it was a pleasure to finally meet Alex from @itsalexhamilton and the fact he suggested Strumpets (one of my favourite Edinburgh cafes) pretty much cemented our friendship in my eyes! We both opted for tea and weren't disappointed. I especially appreciated the fact that the lovely lady who was working there offered to put my tea in a to-go cup.
10. Embo Deli / 29 Haddington Place
Lastly, I ended the month of a lovely surprise. My friend Rosie and I had planned to visit Lucky Yu for lunch but being silly billies we didn't check to see if they were actually open for lunch on weekdays... they aren't (but not to worry, we went back for dinner another day and *spoiler* for next month, we loved it!). Thankfully, Leith is crammed full of wonderful places for lunch and we spotted a place called Embo across the road. Turned out to be a great choice and we definitely would go back again.
